Hoggit
A 'hoggit' is a round bottomed decanter that can not be put down unless it is resting on its wooden cradle or base. Ususally the base is placed beside the host, who then passes the 'hoggit' to the person to his or her left. It then continues clockwise round the table, the guests helping themselves to the Port before passing the 'hoggit' on to their neighbours, until it comes to rest again next to the host. As the decanter can not be put down, there is no chance of anyone 'hogging' it. The use of a 'hoggit' avoids having to invoke the Bishop of Norwich.
