Quinta da Eira Velha

Quinta da Eira Velha is one of the oldest and finest estates in the Douro Valley. It is believed that vines have been cultivated at Eira Velha for over 600 years. The vineyard and buildings occupy a spectacular location on a southeast-facing slope between 160 and 390 meters above the confluence of the Douro River with its tributary, the Pinhão River.

Over the centuries, the estate has been managed by various prestigious owners, both noble and ecclesiastical, and in 1893 it was purchased by the prominent Port wine merchant Cabel Roope. The Roopes, in partnership with another English merchant family, the Newmans, were involved in the Newfoundland fisheries and the triangular trade of cod and Port wine, scenes of which are depicted in the tile murals in the Eira Velha winery.

Quinta da Eira Velha was acquired by the company in 2007. It spans 31 hectares and its approximately 126,000 vines include a significant portion of very old vineyards, particularly in the Sagrado and Soalheira parcels.

The wines from Quinta da Eira Velha are renowned for their depth and complexity of flavor, characterized by typically thick, silky tannins that give them body and their distinctive texture.
