Decanting

Vintage Port forms a natural deposit in the bottle and should be decanted. Stand the bottle upright a few hours before decanting to allow the sediment to fall to the bottom of the bottle.

Storage

Continues to improve for decades after bottling. The bottle should be kept lain down in a cool place, ideally at a temperature below 16ºC.

Serving temperature

Serve at 16ºC to 18ºC. Vintage Port is best drunk one to two days after opening.

Pairing suggestions

Walnuts, blue veined and other richly flavoured cheeses are excellent accompaniments to Vintage Port; so too are dried fruits such as apricots or figs.

About the Wine

A wet 1999 vintage was followed by a cold and dry winter. April and May were very wet with half the annual rainfall falling in these two months. June and July were dry.

August continued dry, with the first half being extremely hot. The end of August and early September had perfect ripening conditions with long warm days. The resulting wines were big and full bodied with intense colour and very attractive aromas.

Less than four pipes were made of this vintage.

Tasting Notes

Deep purple black colour with a vivid magenta rim. Heady, potent nose of concentrated blackcurrant and plum, with notes of liquorice, coffee, spice and leather. A wine of massive scale, depth and background. Crammed with thick sinewy tannins, the palate has the dense, close-grained texture which is the hallmark of the Vinha Velha vintages. The wine abounds with rich juicy, grapey flavour that fills the mouth and lingers on the incredibly long succulent finish. A muscular titan of a wine which overshadows most other vintage ports of the harvest.

ACCOLADES

Full-bodied, relative to this elegant vertical, this also is one of the most delicious in the group, lush, sexy and irresistible. There are touches of chocolate and a long finish. It is just a bit more mature than the 1997, but certainly far, far more expressive while still showing impeccable balance. It is still youthful enough to tighten with air, though. There is brilliant structure to go with brilliant fruit. A couple of hours after being poured, it was better than my first taste. This was one of my favorites, one of the greats of this vertical. The only argument here that anyone can have is how great it is. Right at the moment, I'm thinking "pretty great." This is also a good time to approach it. It has a long life ahead, but it is sexy and succulent now.

“The hue of this wine takes dark and inky to a new level – and this wines intensity is not confined to its colour. This is simply huge in every way, yet because every component is in proportion, the balance is impeccable. Incredibly rich, dense fruit picks up hints of tar and chocolate, while the finish lasts for what must be minutes. Hold.”

“This ’00 Vargellas Vinha Velha is one of the great wines of the vintage, all red spice and red fruit when first opened, broadening to a far, fleshy potency with several hours of air. A day later, the dark sherry flavour and mineral component have only strengthened, along with a pure esteva character that seems to grow right out of the tannic grip. Five days later, the wine is still delicious, a demonstration of its potential longevity”
