About the Wine

Taylor’s holds one of the most extensive reserves of very old cask aged Port of any producer. They include a collection of rare Single Harvest Ports. These are Ports from a single year which age to full maturity in seasoned oak casks and display the year of harvest on the label.

Taylor’s has decided to make a limited release, each year, of a Single Harvest Port made 50 years previously.

The third in the series is the 1966 Single Harvest.

Taylor’s Managing Director, Adrian Bridge, commented: "A 50th birthday or anniversary is a landmark occasion. Taylor’s Single Harvest Ports offer a unique opportunity to celebrate with an extraordinary 50 year old wine in perfect condition.”

The Taylor’s Single Harvest Port is presented in the classic frosted bottle associated with Taylor’s celebrated range of Aged Tawny Ports and will be presented in a high quality wooden box.

Tasting Notes

Medium golden mahogany, with a hint of olive green on the meniscus. The nose is complex with aromas of walnut, macadamia, brown sugar and a warm spicy background of molasses and caramel. The palate is smooth and honeyed, with rich spice, figs, mocha and confit apricot. The acidity is marked and the finish long with beautiful balance.

ACCOLADES

Very elegant, with notes of tobacco and cedar to the lush buttercream, ripe pear and dried apricot flavors. Seductive tropical fruit and spice notes linger on the endless finish, revealing citrusy hints. Drink now.

Wine Spectator

Love the toffee, salted nut, cedar and leather character to this vintage tawny. Honey too. Full and very sweet with silky tannins and a dried fruit finish. Turns to figs and leather on the aftertaste. A superb old wine that was aged in cask until bottling. Drink now.

James Suckling

Surprisingly rich and fresh, this seems younger than its age. The complexity here is not quite as great as with some and the nuances of molasses and the like are controlled. On the other side of the coin, it has a rather sensual texture, finishing with a sugary burst. Underneath is the expected acidity and a bit of pop. Overall, it is rather seductive and quite delicious.

Pale tawny-amber in hue; open, fragrant aromas, milk chocolate and violets, delicate and perfumed; soft, suave and very pure with overly rich, intense dried fruit character (dried apricots and figs), elegant and mellifluous stopping well short of being unctuous. Silky, without a trace of tannin, yet still beautifully fresh for its age with a long finish redolent of Manuka honey.

This Port might have been made in the year England won the World Cup but it's still very much alive, unlike the country's chances of winning another global football title. It is a rich oxidatively made Port; high toned with incredible aromatic richness reminiscent of nuts, caramel and dried fruit. It is sweet on attack yet balanced and elegant on the palate. An intense nectar with a long, long finish that does several victory laps.
