Taylors Port Donates Special Barrel for the Royal Marines 360th Anniversary Celebration
The Tower of London witnessed a momentous occasion as it welcomed the Royal Marines and the Bands of the Royal Marines for the annual ceremony of Constable’s Dues - a tradition dating back to the 14th Century.
In this significant year marking the Royal Marines' 360th anniversary, the ceremony kick-started their celebrations. Mentzendorff and Taylors' Port were honored to contribute a very special barrel of port for the occasion.
Delivered by Royal Marine Commandos via raiding craft fast boats and escorted by a Commando Merlin helicopter, this precious cargo of Taylor’s Port was presented to General Sir Gordon Messenger, the Constable of the Tower, by the Yeoman Warders (Beefeaters).
Following the time-honored tradition, the barrel of port was ceremoniously tasted and now resides in the exclusive Beefeaters Bar, a privilege reserved for a select few.
What are the ‘Dues’
This longstanding tradition dictates that every Royal Naval vessel mooring at the Tower Wharf must present the Constable with a barrel of wine. This barrel, known as the 'Dues', is escorted into the Tower by the Yeoman Warders and presented on Tower Green.
While the ceremony holds historical significance, it remains more than just symbolic. Once delivered, the barrel is opened and the wine enjoyed, carrying on the tradition in full spirit.
It was an honor for Taylor's Port to be part of this historic event, and we look forward to many more celebrations in the Royal Marines' special year of 2024!
